AASD teacher tests positive for COVID-19 as staff prepares for start of school: Officials

ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — A teacher for Altoona Area School District has tested positive for the coronavirus as staff prepare for students to return to school, officials confirm. Community Relations Director Paula Foreman says a teacher at the Mowrie A. Ebner Elementary School received a positive COVID-19 test result and the school has since been deep cleaned and disinfected. Foreman says the Pennsylvania Department of Health has been made aware of the case and school officials are following the health department’s guidelines.

Penn State wrestler Bo Nickal wins Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year

UNIVERSITY PARK — Nittany Lion wrestler Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas) has been named the 2019 Big Ten Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year. Nickal was honored from a field that featured each of the 14 Big Ten members’ Male Athletes of the Year. Iowa women’s basketball player Megan Gustafson was named the 2019 Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year. Nickal is the first Penn State student to be named Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year since fellow wrestler David Taylor was honored in 2014.

Pennsylvania hiker dies on New Hampshire mountain despite life-saving efforts

THOMPSON MESERVE’S PURCHASE, N.H. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man who suffered a medical emergency in the White Mountains of New Hampshire has died despite extensive efforts by rescue crews, authorities said. Jason Apreku, 21, of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, was hiking with friends Friday when he collapsed on Mount Madison, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said in a statement. His friends called for help and began CPR while an Army National Guard helicopter was dispatched from Concord.

Pittsburgh (WJAC) — The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially revealed their initial 53-man roster for the 2023 NFL season. Teams around the league had until 4 p.m. Tuesday to make the necessary roster moves. Among the Steelers' notable roster cuts includes the release of tight end Zach Gentry. Gentry was drafted by Pittsburgh in the 5th round of the 2019 draft. He has played in 40 career games with the Steelers, recording 39 receptions for 303 yards.

Alice Cooper loses cosmetics deal after calling transgenderism 'a fad'

WASHINGTON (TND) — A self-described LGBT+-owned cosmetics brand has ended a partnership with rock performer Alice Cooper after he criticized gender transition procedures for minors. Vampyre Cosmetics cut ties with Cooper earlier this month after the singer called "cases of transgender" a "fad” in aninterview with music blog Stereogum. “I’m understanding that there are cases of transgender, but I’m afraid that it’s also a fad, and I’m afraid there’s a lot of people claiming to be this just because they want to be that,” Cooper said in the interview.

Chipotle 'fiber bowls' exposed to cancer-causing chemicals

The bowls at Chipotle have become a staple for the restaurant. But a new report is drawing some big concerns about them. The New Food Economy says it found the fiber bowls are exposed to chemicals that can lead to cancer. The study says the bowls are treated with PFAS, as perfluorooctanoic acid is known. The substance is also called "forever chemicals." It helps bowls hold hot, wet and greasy food.

Suspect in Oakhurst double shooting waives hearing; charges bound for court

(WJAC) — The suspect accused of shooting two people last September at Oakhurst homes, killing one of them and wounding the other, appeared in Cambria County court on Tuesday where he waived his preliminary hearing. In October, Jashon Gordon was arrested in Ohio in connection to the Sept. 22 shooting that claimed the life of 19-year-old Emerald Nugent Jr. Officials say Nugent died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide.
