Ohtani's Dodgers contract has $680 million deferred, lowering tax value to $46 million annually

NEW YORK (AP) — Shohei Ohtani will receive just $20 million of his $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers over the next 10 years, with $680 million payable from 2034-43 in an unusual structure that gives the team greater payroll flexibility in coming seasons. Ohtani's record-setting deal, agreed to Saturday, calls for annual salaries of $70 million, according to details obtained by The Associated Press. Of each year's salary, $68 million is deferred with no interest, payable in equal installments each July 1 from 2034-43.

Part of PA Turnpike to close temporarily Sat. night

BREEZEWOOD, Pa. (WJAC) — Officials with the Pennsylvania Turnpike said part of the roadway will be closed Saturday night into Sunday morning. They said the eastbound lanes will close at 11 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday between the New Stanton and Breezewood exits. The lanes are being closed so crews can safely finish placing steel beams for the new North Center Avenue bridge near mile marker 110 in Somerset County, according to officials.

Johnstown YMCA in danger of closing

Cambria County, Pa. (WJAC) — For 150 years the Greater Johnstown YMCA has been a part of the community, but staff are worried they won’t be in Johnstown for 150 more. After closing for nearly four months because of the COVID-19 pandemic, CEO Shawn Sebring, says only half of the YMCA’s members have returned. ”What they’ve been telling us is many of them are working from home so they’re not working downtown and the YMCA is not the most convenient place for them to exercise now.

New Orleans valedictorian conquers homelessness and earns full scholarship

NEW ORLEANS (TND) — A high school senior in New Orleans is beating the odds and proving anything is possible if you work hard enough. Elijah Hogan is a standout student not only for being smart but also because he became valedictorian while homeless. Among his achievements, he graduated with a 3.89 GPA from Walter L. Cohen High School and accepted a full ride to Xavier University where he will major in graphic design, according to WDSU.

Paul Carpenter Capital Advisors hopes to compete for JCBL title

JOHNSTOWN — The Johnstown Collegiate Baseball League's Paul Carpenter Capital Advisors organization is ready to return to baseball. PCCA is coming off a regular season JCBL title last season. The team returns a majority of its pitching staff from last year's squad. Now, the team is adding a catcher from Oklahoma State. But, PCCA--and the rest of the JCBL--can't start their season on the regularly-scheduled day of June 2 because of COVID-19.

Williamsburg High School teacher accused of having sex with a student

WILLIAMSBURG - A teacher at Williamsburg High School has been charged by state police with having sexual intercourse with a student. According to police, Nikki Varney, 44, has been charged with institutional sexual assault, statutory sexual assault, corruption of minors and unlawful contact with minors. Police said their investigation began after the school reported to police that Varney was in a sexual relationship with a male student. The investigation led officers to discover that the sexual encounter between Varney and the student took place over the summer.

22nd annual Fire & Ice Festival in Somerset brings community together

SOMERSET -- It was a bit cold Saturday in Somerset, but it was perfect weather for the 22nd annual Fire and Ice Festival. The festival, which started Friday, has had more than a thousand people attend so far. Organizers said they passed out 1,300 pins for the event. There were more than 35 ice sculptures, and lots of activities and food for the family. "I've been coming here for a long time, and I like coming here because I like to see all the neat sculptures, and they have really good kettle corn here too,"
