Local wrestler, former World Champion Bo Bassett signs NIL deal
Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — Local wrestler and former World Champion Bo Bassett announced on his social media pages that he has signed his first NIL deal with the athletic recovery company "Ice Barrel."
"I am very excited to announce I signed my first NIL deal! With how hard I train, I felt it made sense to sign my first deal with Ice Barrel. They are the leaders in recovery," Bassett said in a Tweet.

Woman charged for abandoning dog in stroller at Pittsburgh airport
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A woman accused of intentionally abandoning her dog at a Pennsylvania airport before she boarded a flight to a resort in Mexico earlier this month has been charged with animal cruelty and related charges, authorities announced Thursday.
Allegheny County Police say Allison Lyn Gaiser, 44, tried to bring her brown-and-white male French bulldog with her on a flight departing from Pittsburgh International Airport on Aug. 4. But the dog was denied boarding by the airline because it did not meet the criteria for an emotional support animal and did not have a proper kennel as required.
Bishop McCort Catholic High School discusses implementing a 4-day school week
In recent years, 4-day school weeks have been becoming more and more popular among schools in the United states. According to research published in the peer-reviewed journal, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analyis, in the last decade alone, shortened school weeks have been adopted in more than 1,600 schools in 650 school districts nationwide. Bishop Mccort Catholic Highschool is currently conducting discussions between parents and the school about what a shortened school week would mean for them.
DuBois Area School District proposing closure of 3 elementary schools
DUBOIS - In two weeks, the DuBois Area School Board will make a final decision on whether or not to close three of its seven elementary schools.
The board has been discussing the possibility of closing Penfield, Sykesville and Luthersburg elementary schools for the 2017-18 school year since last year.
If the board would ultimately choose to close the three schools, Penfield students would be integrated between Oklahoma and Juniata elementary schools in DuBois; Sykesville students into C.
Firefighters from across Pennsylvania prepare for 'Red Flag Day'

Humane Society of Somerset County rescues dogs from hurricane aftermath, looking for homes
SOMERSET, Pa. (WJAC) — After Hurricane Laura left thousands of people in Louisiana without a home, some had to surrender their pets. Now, some of the animals have ended up in Western Pennsylvania due to overflowing animal shelters. Thirteen dogs are now at The Humane Society of Somerset County waiting to be adopted.
“The people have lost everything. Everything was devastated. They were really the heroes in this story because they did what was best for their pet and that was to surrender them to an organization that could give them a better life,” said shelter manager, Nancy Dantzig.
Pay-what-you-can restaurant nears opening in DuBois
DUBOIS, Pa. — After more than two years of fundraising, a pay-what-you-can restaurant in Clearfield County served its first customers Friday.
The Soul Platter Cafe is located on West Scribner Ave. in DuBois.
The restaurant held a "Friends and Family Day" Friday to give its volunteers some extra practice before opening to the public.
The nonprofit restaurant provides meals to customers, regardless of their monetary circumstance. “Anyone is welcome to come in and have a meal, whether they can pay for it or not,"
Portage wrestling coaches accused of soliciting child porn as part of team 'tradition'
PORTAGE, Pa. (WJAC) — Investigators say two Portage wrestling coaches are facing felony charges for encouraging their team to share naked pictures of underage high school students as part of a “tradition” at an annual tournament in Allegheny County.
According to a criminal complaint filed by agents of the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, 33-year-old Michael Fox and 31-year-old Bradley Rousell have been charged with multiple counts of soliciting child pornography.
Annual NYC parade for Israel draws thousands under heightened security measures
NEW YORK (AP) — An annual New York City parade for Israel that draws thousands of people kicked off Sunday with heightened security and a focus on solidarity during the war in Gaza.
The parade comes almost eight months after the unprecedented Oct. 7 attack by Hamas, the deadliest in Israel's history. The parade in the past was dubbed "Celebrate Israel," but organizers said the exuberant atmosphere would be paused this year given the war and Israeli hostages still being held in captivity, as well as outbursts of antisemitism worldwide.
